A forest, a million different organisms and things, all allocated to one purpose; to grow. And so they do. The plants start to unfurl from their seeds, bursting from the cage that once held them, their roots burrowing their way through the rich soil. As they do so do the necks of the plants that claw for the light, stretching and moving so that their only source of food can be consumed. Their green viscera that can be called leaves claim what is only to be theirs, the white tongues of the roots greedily begin to entangle with the ground, so that they may become one and deplete the ground of minerals. Claiming the goblet of life that holds water and nitrogen, drinking it till it’s dry.

But even this is not enough, for there are others in this organism that is a jungle. Other plants, roots squirming within the dirt, taking what was meant for another. So the plants begin to fight. They twist around each other, a great race of whom will be the tallest, and who will choke out the sunlight first. As they fight the roots will come out of the dirt, taking a breath of air before they start to twist around another plant, finding their nutrients in the other.

While these organisms fight, larger and more “complex” creatures trample over their unforeseen battles and wars, devouring them, and forsaking whatever attempt there was to grow at all.

It is a constant battle, growing the tallest, growing the biggest, growing the strongest, in order to gain the nutrients needed to survive. Yet, it is not always a battle, for there is kindness in growth.

The taller plants; the trees, will talk with one another through their roots, embracing each other instead of the ground, growing steadier and stronger. As they rise to become tall giants one may worry, one may not grow as fast, but the other tree will not leave them, instead through their interconnected roots they send messages, they send nutrients. In promise to both rise tall and support one another, they share the cup of life.

This is true growth. On the floor, the same wars for resources are waged, yet the giants who raised above it are connected in more than just something physical, they are bonded together by communal fortification, constant and above.
