I got the chance to interview Mrs. Emily – who had previously played water polo at the collegiate level – to see how she was and is still impacted by her sport through habits, mentality, and physical aspects.
When asked about some habits Mrs. Emily picked up from sports that she continues to have in the present day, she spoke about her habit of being a morning person. She explained that she often wakes up around 5:00 am every day out of habit because of the morning practices and lifts she had to do in both club and college practices. Mrs. Emily says she enjoys having this habit because it allows her to start her day and complete many tasks before many people are even awake.
In addition, Mrs. Emily spoke about how she has the habit of adapting to team environment activities very easily because of needing to develop this skill for water polo. She even talked about how learning teamwork has helped in terms of her workplace because of the job she does now. This ties into the physical habits she has as she finds it easier to workout with a group of people rather than alone as she feels more inspired and likes to have a team to work with.
Similarly, she now finds that she is more “lazy” since in both club and college levels life is always on the go and your schedule is so busy which has caused her to cherish the moments that she does not have to be so busy all the time. She explained that the transition from working out so often to nothing was a challenge for her because of the necessity to find what workout activities fit you best but that once you find it you can enjoy it.
In conclusion, being able to sit and talk with Mrs. Emily about her habits both mental and physical after doing sports for so long reveals how sports do affect your life overall and form habits that can stick with you forever!
