Throughout my childhood, me and my best friend always had different takes:
She loved purple, I loved blue.
She loved her dogs while I loved my cat.
But the biggest difference in our opinions was to this question:
“If you could stop time, would you prevent growing up?”
My naive 10 year old self had her answer:
“No! I can’t wait to go to high school and grow up.”
But her answer was always:
“I would love to stay young forever.”
And I never really understood why.
Why wouldn’t you want to grow up and live your “High School Musical” fantasy?
Why wouldn’t you want to go to prom with the cute boy?
Why wouldn’t you want the stress of college applications?
Why wouldn’t you want the responsibility of your future?
Now, I realize she was right.
It only took seven years of reflecting to realize I would 100% stop time.
I would keep frolicking in my backyard, playing into the wee hours of summer,
I would draw and create with my paints until I lost all track of time,
Only interrupted when my mom called for dinner.
There is excitement to be brought by the promise of tomorrow,
But I wouldn’t mind stopping the clock just for a moment,
Halting the uncertainty of my imminent fate.
