Orange Lutheran is making history as they join over a hundred high schools in CIF-SS for the first season of girls flag football. The team has thirty nine athletes on their JV and Varsity teams, quickly establishing the sport on campus. The athletes play in a 7-on-7 formation for twenty minute halves, competing in the Trinity League and non-league tournaments. Despite being a new sport to many, the team quickly became an unstoppable force on the field, leaving a trail of victories behind them. The first season of flag football could not have been more of a success, with the girls having an amazing overall record of 19-9 and becoming undefeated trinity league champions. These girls have surpassed all expectations through their amazing season, scoring a total of 559 points throughout a total of 28 games. The team competed in the Beckman and El Toro Tournaments, finishing remarkably with a record of 3-2 as semi finalists. These athletes’ hard work and determination on the field has displayed exceptional results for their first season.
Since this sport was relatively new to the Orange Lutheran community, many athletes in their offseason decided to try flag football. The diverse and talented group of girls from different sports brought a unique set of athletic skills essential for their teams success. Linebacker Joanna Valdez expresses how “she loved the group of girls, as flag football brought girls from all different sports together”. She further explains how the camaraderie and friendships created continued off the field, where she’s truly grown closer to her teammates. Overall, the girls flag football team was a powerhouse on the field, creating history and long lasting friendships through their impeccable season.
